The Harmful Effects Of Blue Light

There is some evidence that blue light could damage our vision by harming retina overtime.

Retinal Damage- sunlight contains UV and blue light. Blue light, which is part of the visible light spectrum, reaches deeper into the eye and its cumulative effect can cause damage to the retina. Furthermore, in certain wavelengths, blue light is implicated in the development of age-related macular degeneration.

Blue light effects your overall health as well :

1- Induces headaches or migraine attacks

2- Leads to eye fatigue and pain

3- Supresses melatonin production, which can lead to disruption of sleep

4- Causes damage to the retina of your eye and contributes to other eye disorders

Sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens ( TVs, computers, lab tops, smart phones and tablets ) , electronic devices, and fluorescent and LED lighting.

Many of us are staring at a blue light computer screen all day work and then our phone and tablets too. Other than reducing the amount of time we spend looking at the screen, we can buy a screen cover that blocks out the blue light. Also, change your cellphone screen to Amber/Orange, many new phones have this option.

We can also increase our intake of whole organic foods that are high in eyesight protective Beta-carotene, lutein and Zeaxanthin such as : sweet potatoes, orange and yellow carrots, pumpkin, squash, blueberries, billberries, beet greens, kale, spinach, mango, and veggies along with the superfood Spirulina. You can read all about Spirulina in my previous posts and all its benefits.

Some other key vitamins and nutrients that help maintain eye health are Vitamin A, C, B6, B12, Riboflavin, Niacin, Lutein, and Omega 3 fatty acids.
