Skin-101: Retinol Vs. Bakuchiol

Retinol works and exfoliates unnecessary dead skin cells, which causes the stem cell layers of skin to produce newer and more healthy cells. "Retinol is collagen and elastin boosting", it can actually help thicken the skin overtime if used appropriately.

But, if you are overusing retinol, or using one that's too strong for you, it can lead to peeling, irritation, and excessive dryness, which may lead to retinol's association with skin thinning. This will make your skin look older and accentuate wrinkles. The recommended use is retinol 0.3-0.5 %. Using a higher level off the bat can cause skin irritation if you have thinner skin.

As effective as it is, Retin-A isn't for everyone. Most importantly pregnant women should not use Retin-A, because its been linked to birth defects and fetal development problems. Retinol also makes skin more sensitive to the sun, so you always have to use sun block while using retinol.

Good news for those with sensitive skin, finally a natural alternative to retinol , known as bakuchiol, a gentle, vegan ingredient.

What is Bakuchiol ?

Bakuchiol is a compound that naturally occurs in the seed and leaves of the plant psoralen coryifolia in the indian subcontinent.

Unlike retinol, bakuchiol has no harsh side effects on the skin and is a much more gentle alternatives.

Bakuchiol is proven to have similar gene expression regulation as retinol. Both boost collagen and elastin production and reduce photo-aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

The result of using bakuchiol is a significant improvement in skin elasticity , firmness, pigmentation, and hydration.

Research has shown 12 weeks of bakuchiol application can result in smoother, firmer, and all around more youthful looking skin. Until more research is out, I would still not recommend the use of bakuchiol if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Who has used bakuchiol, drop me a note and let me know if you liked it and it was effective for you.
