Updated: Jul 10, 2021

We have heard of pretty much all the vitamins by now, but how about vitamin K2 ?

What is vitamin K2 ?

In recent studies its been shown that vitamin K2 assists vitamin D, to get calcium into the bones and to keep calcium out of the arteries, organs, and joints.

In some studies they have shown that vitamin K2 supplements actually strengthens the bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis, and bone fractures. In other words, it promotes the calcification of bones and prevents the calcification of blood vessels and kidneys. In addition vitamin K has been shown to promote cardiovascular health and arterial elasticity and to boost immune function as well.

Deficiencies of vitamin K2 have been associated with osteoarthritis , and vascular calcification among other things.

Vitamin K2 also plays an indirect yet very important role in the health of your hair and nails as well.

Remember vitamin D and K work synergistically. Adults and children require adequate amount of both, vitamin D and vitamin K to create the ultimate duo for bone health.

Foods that are high in vitamin K2 include : Egg yolk, butter, chicken leg, ground beef, and soft cheese.

When choosing a supplement it is important to choose the right vitamin K2 , MK-7 is best due to its longer half-life. And, eat the supplement with fat, to increase its maximum absorption.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before supplementing with vitamin K2, if you are on blood thinner, like warfarin, have an allergy, and or intolerance.
