Managing Covid-19 Anxiety and Depression Without Medications

Updated: Dec 3, 2020

Lets face it many people are feeling severe anxiety and depression over the Covid-19 outbreak.

The reason many feel anxiety can be contributed to so many factors : Loss of control, financial hardships, Family dynamics, and so many more. Instead of turning to prescription anti- anxiety and sleep medications I always encourage my patients to start with natural remedies and supplements with lower incidence of side effects.

Consider Magnesium- Magnesium has been shown in numerous studies to help ease anxiety. Studies have shown that people do not get enough magnesium from their diet and therefore, supplementation may be necessary. Magnesium Bisglycinate is the salt form used for sleep/anxiety, 1-2 hours before bedtime.

Omega-3 - Has been well studied for its efficacy in treating depression and anxiety. Rates of depression are lower in countries where people consume the most seafood. It is believed that Omega-3 supplementation in populations that don't consume a lot of fish, could be beneficial as a depression treatment.

Vitamin D- is shown to play a big role in regulating mood, as well as aiding in brain function and development. Getting more sun and increasing vitamin D could really help with mood disorders. A number of previous studies have shown how vitamin D can prevent or reduce depression in adults. The specific form of vitamin D is also important. This study found that vitamin D3 offered a stronger anti-depressant benefits than vitamin D2.

In addition , there is a lot of studies on vitamin C and B6 which are good for reducing stress hormones and lessening depression. There is a link between vitamin C and mood. A Study of high school students indicated that vitamin C lowered anxiety levels, and other studies have shown mood-elevating effects from taking vitamin C.

Vitamin B6- plays an important role in brain health, it produces seretonin, dopamine, and GABA. Levels of all these chemicals play a role in depression. One study showed that seniors who consumed more dietary B6 were 43% less likely to become depressed. Also, B6 is crucial in the production of seretonin, which gets converted to melatonin, the sleep hormone and a strong antioxidant. Multiple studies suggest formulations including B6 are extremely effective

Exercise, and other physical activity produce endorphins - chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers, and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress. About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

Please encourage all your friends and family to follow the mandated laws of staying home, so that we can defeat Covid-19 and things can go back to normal. Please stay home and safe. Dr.Naghmeh
