Lack of Vitamin D and Hair Loss

Research shows that a lack of Vitamin D in your body can lead to hair loss. One role Vitamin D plays is stimulating new and old hair follicles. When there isn't enough Vitamin D in your system, new hair growth can be stunted.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to alopecia, the autoimmune condition that causes bald patches on the scalp and other areas of the body. Both men and woman can experience alopecia. One study in people with alopecia areata showed that lower vitamin D blood levels tended to be associated with a more severe hair loss.

In another study with the US national library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the association between vitamin D levels and alopecia aerate was investigated. The study concluded that there was a significant correlation between alopecia and Vitamin D deficiency.

Other symptoms in the body that may indicate a lack of Vitamin D include muscle pain, getting sick or infected often, feeling very tired, bone and back pain, depression or having impaired wound healing.
