Iron deficiency occurs when the body doesn't have enough of the mineral iron , this leads to abnormally low levels of red blood cells.
There are many iron supplement options. Synthetic Iron supplements come in 3 main forms : Iron bisglycinate, Iron sulfate, and Iron fumarate.
Iron Bisglycinate is an iron form that is bound to the amino acid glycine, and is absorbed twice as efficiency as ferrous sulfate. In a study, subjects in a randomized, crossover study of the tolerability of Iron bisglycinate versus ferrous sulfate found the iron bisglycinate was less likely to cause GI upset.
The commonly prescribed iron sulfate and iron fumarate are not actually recommended, up to 50% of people taking these experience : constipation, nausea, and stomach pain.
As important as iron is, however, its not the only key nutrient for blood building. Studies indicate that combining iron with several B vitamins and vitamin C is superior to using these nutrients individually.
