Eating Disorder Awareness week : part 1 , Pharmacist view
At least 30 million people of all ages and gender suffer from an eating disorder in the U.S. An eating disorder such an anorexia nervosa , or binge eating disorder. Worldwide, the figure is more like 70 millions sufferers.
Pharmacists are often the first healthcare professional that a person with an eating disorder will come in contact with . I believe pharmacists can play a vital role in the detection of eating disorders by monitoring the use of prescription and non-prescription medications/products and weight loss aids. As a pharmacist , I believe we are In a key position to detect the presence of an eating disorder, encourage the person to seek help and assist them with referrals. I believe providing a non-judgemental, comfortable environment for the patient is essential in discussing the issue . We need to discuss referral to other health professionals such as GP, dietician , psychiatrists, or other specialists if necessary.
Early intervention is an important part of addressing the issue of eating disorder and in order to promote recovery .
It’s important to realize there is no one size fits all when it comes to treatment. Patients must feel that they have a voice in the decision making process .
