Clarity about vitamin D Supplements

I have talked about the benefits of Vitamin D on many occasions. The benefits of Vitamin D3 are many : Bone health, skin and hair health, immune system, aging process, mood health, eye health, and etc.

There have been new randomized trials showing that Vitamin D supplements don't benefit heart disease, various types of cancer, or diabetes... despite years of promising observational data.

Plus most evidence suggests Vitamin D supplements don't reduce falls in seniors.

We need to get enough Vitamin D to maintain bone health, from food and supplement. Studies have shown that Vitamin D3 may be more potent than D2. In general adults need 600 IU daily up to age 70 , and 800-1,000 IU for older patients. Data suggests routine use of high doses especially 4,000 IU and higher lack benefits and may lower bone density, possibly by stimulating bone resorption. The high doses of Vitamin D 50,000 IU once weekly should be an option to treat deficiency only.

Food sources of Vitamin D include eggs, liver, fatty fish, orange juice or milk. But many adults may need a supplement if food isn't enough. Again, please consult your doctor or pharmacist to figure out the best dose for you and have your levels checked before initiating Vitamin D supplements .
