Can Deodorant Cause Breast Cancer ?

I thought since its National Cancer day, I should talk about this controversial topic that has been going on for years. There is a lot of information out on the internet that aluminum containing antiperspirant prevent toxins from being expelled by the body and that these toxins clog up the lymph nodes around armpits and breast, and cause breast cancer.

There's also been concern that there's a link between aluminum and the development of breast cancer that's estrogen-positive. But a big study of more than 1,600 women published in 2002 showed no link between breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, deodorant use or even shaving the underarms.

According to Dr. Chirag Shah, who is a radiologist oncologist , there are other things we should probably be more concerned about when it comes to breast cancer risk. Age, the use of hormone replacement therapy and family history are some of the biggest risk factors for breast cancer, and those are far more important, in his opinion.

My answer to patients is, since there are so many choices of aluminum free/natural deodorants , why not take advantage of them, and remove toxins from your body. One of my favorite natural deodorant is by Schmidtsnaturals, with many natural scents and choices which are aluminum free.
